Queen Mary Haunted Ship

Most Haunted Places in America: The RMS Queen Mary

This ship was started in 1930 by the Cunard Steamship Company and one year later, stopped due to the depression in the UK. Construction resumed in 1934 and in that same year Cunard Steamship Company merged with The White Star Line who would coincidentally own and operate the Titanic. The ship saw its maiden voyage in May of 1936.

She was built for transatlantic civilian service but that would not be its legacy. In 1940 she was painted grey and given an ominous new name, Gray Ghost. Its new service for World War II would be to transport up to 15,000 troops at a time, mainly for the United States War effort.

It is this war time service that most of Queen Mary’s ghosts are attributed to. According to psychic Peter James, there are approximately 600 active ghosts who reside on the Queen Mary. The ship was not equipped with air conditioning and transporting so many troops at a time had them packed in real tight. There are reports that during the hottest points of the day, troops would die at a rate of one every 7 minutes.

The Queen Mary also was involved in moving prisoners of war from both the Germans and the Italians and was housed in the isolation ward on B deck. A lot of these prisoners were very young, some around 17 years old. Instead of facing the possibility of spending the rest of the war in a prisoner of war camp, they chose to commit suicide on the ship.

The RMS Queen Mary was retired in 1967 and brought to Long Beach, California and has been operated as a hotel featuring 365 quest rooms, restaurants and special events. It is said to have numerous spots for paranormal activities all over the ship, everything from voices to full apparitions in vintage clothing.

One of the most active paranormal spots on the ship is the engine room. The most infamous is considered the heavy watertight door 13. It is said that this door has crushed two men to death during its time. The latest victim was 18 year old John Peddler in 1966; Peddler was bearded and wore blue coveralls at the time of his death. A ghost dressed in blue coveralls and sporting a beard has been seen walking down the corridor and disappearing where the old door 13 used to be.

The luxury liner had a first and second class swimming pool during its time and though no longer in use today, the areas that they used to be is another paranormal hotspot. Women have been seen dressed in vintage 1930 swim suits walking the decks near the old pool area. In the second class pool area, a young girl 4-5 years old named Jackie who drowned in the pool during one of the ships cruises also is seen. People have heard her voice and well as laughter emanating from where the pool once was.

Reports of a women dancing in what was once the first class lounge, distant knocks, doors slamming, aromas of long past smells, high pitch screams and many other paranormal activity has been reported throughout the years. Here is a part of a Queen Mary ghost video about some on the things written about here.

Interesting about the young German and Italian prisoners in the ISO ward. Never heard that before.
I’ve always heard the prisoners were transported in the forward cargo hold. I have done many investigations in the forward cargo hold and have recorded EVPs in German.
