Haunted Places in America: The Myrtles Plantation
The Myrtles Plantation in Louisiana is a hotel that comes with a history. With the speculation of more than ten murders being committed on the property over the last three hundred years and the hotel being placed on top of an ancient Indian burial ground – Could there be any merit to the thoughts of the plantation turned hotel being haunted by a variety of ghostly activity?
The story is thought to begin with a slave named Cloe that becomes the mistress to the plantation manager. She manages to have an affair and then is caught eavesdropping on the family after the affair had ended. For punishment, one of Cloe’s ears was cut off and she was then immediately sent back into the field to continue her work for the day. She then started to plan her revenge, the mistress baked a cake for a party and included poison in the ingredients. There were two stories that have to do with Cloe poisoning the cake. One story tells of Cloe trying to get back into the house to get closer to the family and another story tells of her trying to murder the family and get back at them with the poison.
After eating the cake, the wife and two children of the plantation manager passed away and Cloe was haunted by the mother of the children. She was then apparently dragged out of the house by the other slaves who were fearful of the repercussions and hung. To this day, visitors insist that they can see Cloe, as well as the two children haunting the plantation. The mother is often seen in the hotel as well.
There are three ghosts that are seen over and over inside of the hotel. The first is a French woman that seems to wander from room to room in search of something. No one knows what it is that she is in search for. The second ghost sighting that is seen on a regular basis includes a ghost at the grand piano that practices one chord over and over again and the third ghost that is frequently seen, is a young girl who is only appears before the onset of a thunderstorm.
The plantation is home to many of these ghosts that all come with different stories. The murders involving Cloe were only a portion of the murders that have been said to have occurred on this property. People have reported seeing numerous ghostly sightings based on these ten murders during their visit at the hotel.
There are many other stories that go along with the plantation and the guests that have visited the hotel. Of course, these stories come with some level of skepticism but there have been documented pictures and videos of the ghosts that are said to haunt the hotel. If you are brave enough, you could simply book a night at the hotel, hope for a thunderstorm and do some investigating of your own!

I have read in many books (one being “The Haunting of America” by Troy Taylor) that no slave named Chloe actually existed and that judge Woodruff and Sarah Mathilda had 3 kids, Cornelia Gale, James, and Mary Octavia. The story goes that Sarah Mathilda died in 1823 of yellow fever which spread to their son James and daughter Cornelia who both died from the same illness in 1824. Judge Woodruff and Octavia moved to Laurel Grove with Sarah Mathilda’s mother, and Octavia lived to be fairly old. I have no doubt that the Myrtles Plantation is haunted though. And the story is great. in my opinion, maybe the Chloe story was cooked up for publicity or dramatic effect?
