The LaLaurie House Hauntings

Haunted Places in America: The LaLaurie House

The LaLaurie house which can be found in New Orleans is said to be one of the most haunted, haunted houses in the America. There have been horrific accounts of slavery that have taken place in the home for over one hundred fifty years which contribute to the ghostly activity that is found within the home today.

Madame LaLaurie was the woman of the mansion and part of the elite within the city. The home held extravagant features such as hand carvings and was host to lavish parties. Aside from the intelligent, beautiful exterior, Madame LaLaurie had a cruel and evil streak which can allow us to see the origins of the haunting in the LaLaurie mansion.

There were dozens of slaves that ran the household and there are even tales of the cook being chained to the fireplace in the kitchen to cater the lavish dinner parties that occurred in the area. Even slave children were not immune to the behavior of Madame LaLaurie. She chased children from the home with whips and has been said to not account for the many slaves that would enter the home and those that would just disappear.

The cook finally had enough of this treatment and legend claims that he finally set fire to the home and when the firefighters began to examine the home they found a barred off room that was filled with bodies on operating tables, half cut open and organs removed from the bodies. Stomachs were sliced open and intestines were used to wrap around the body combined with mouths that had been sewn shut.

After the fire and the truth came out Madame LaLaurie and her family disappeared from New Orleans. To this day, it has been said that her victims – at least twelve of them haunt the home in which they were killed. Even as little as a few years ago there have been accounts of renovators finding a makeshift graveyard under the wood floor of one of the luxury condos that the building has been turned into.

There have been accounts that even after  the LaLaurie family was removed from the home that business and other ventures that had tried to open in the home failed and suffered from paranormal activity, such as dark sticky liquid that was found on the sofas in the furniture store. The store owner closed the store down shortly after as there were often other accounts of paranormal activity.

There could have been multiple victims that the Madame of the house claimed. Who knows how many hasty graves that she created in the floors of the home, and other parts of the home. These ghosts were ripped from their slave quarters and made to take part in experiments and tortured in ways that are unimaginable. There have been many recordings and paranormal investigations that concluded that there are indeed high levels of paranormal activity in the area – it is indeed one of the most haunted places in the French Quarter.
