Most Haunted Places in America

The Haunts of the Dauphine House

Posted by Ghost Writer

We have been fortunate enough to meet some very awesome people in this paranormal field. One of these people I now consider a friend is Karen Jeffries. It just so happens that Karen owns a haunted bed and breakfast in New Orleans. So it is only fitting that the Dauphine House Bed and Breakfast is one of the most haunted houses in America.

Karen has been participating in one way or the other in the paranormal field for over 16 years. She bought this home in 1997 and as you will read from her own story below has experienced paranormal activity since day one, including apparitions of people as well as a Tabby cat.

So, I first discovered that my house was haunted shortly after I bought it. I couldn’t move in initially because I had so much work to do…..rewiring, re-plumbing, raising ceilings, etc. One day though, I just had to drop something off upstairs before it got dark because I still had no electricity. I was running up the stairs when— BAM! —it was like an invisible wall stopped me! I looked at the top of the stairs and there was a couple standing there. They wore clothes from the end of the 1800’s. My house was built in 1860, so that made sense. The thing is though….they were standing there smiling! So I said, “Thank you for your beautiful home. I’m going to try and restore it back to its original beauty.” Then I ran upstairs, dropped my stuff off, and left!

So, finally the day comes when I can move in. All my psychic friends wanted to come over and see what was happening here. I have a man who paces the balconies back and forth. One friend says that he’s just waiting for someone to come home. Another friend says that he’s very worried about money and that’s why he’s pacing. (If he was the original builder of the house that would make sense. It was built in 1860 when New Orleans was at the height of prosperity and culture. Then the Civil War hit, and New Orleans suffered a horrible depression for decades.) Then there’s also a man in a top hat and formal overcoat. I was told that he followed me home. There’s also a little girl about 8 years old. We feel that she was the daughter of a previous owner. Then, my big old Tabby cat is still here too.

My friends and guests have reported a lot of things. A friend who was house sitting for me and staying upstairs in my apt heard the guy on the balcony bumping into my potted plants! He was so loud that she couldn’t sleep! So, she turned on the window unit to drown out the noise!

Downstairs in the guest rooms, people have seen and heard some of the doors unlatching and opening on their own. Some have seen the outline of a top hat. One friend, who is also a paranormal investigator, saw a dark shadow gliding across the ceiling. One guest was awakened at 2:00am when she heard the key in the armoire rattling, then fall out of the key hole and slide across the floor!

The Dauphine House Bed and Breakfast is located just two blocks from the French Quarter and features three guest rooms with 12-foot ceilings and hardwood floors. Each room has a private bath, queen bed, free WiFi for your laptop, small refrigerator, microwave, cable TV, phone and coffee maker.

Give Karen a call at 504-940-0943 or visit the Dauphine House if you want to spend a wonderful time in New Orleans and possible share a house with an apparition or two. Mention you saw this on Ghost Eyes and ask about a private ghost tour of all the interesting places in New Orleans.
