Most Haunted Places in America: Hayswood Hospital

In Maysville Kentucky there is a four story brick rectangular building that still stands strong. Neglected by man decades ago, this building once played a major role in taking care of a growing community. The Hayswood Hospital served the community well until it could not keep up with the growth. Now, many say it still serves the unseen people still walking the halls. The haunted Hayswood Hospital has produced many paranormal claims by the people who visit there.

In the 1800’s the Wilson Infirmary was built as a medical center for the community and run by May Pearl Wilson. Wilson died in 1908 and the building was torn down to make way for a bigger facility in 1915 which was for a time called Hayswood Seminary. It was not until 1923 when the name was changed to Hayswood Hospital to reflect all the full services that were then offered.

As the community grew so did the hospital with additions being added in 1925 and again in 1971. At its best the Hayswood Hospital had 87 beds available. This was ample space to meet the needs of its small community. All things change however and it was decided a new hospital was needed. The Meadowview Regional Medical Center was built and in 1983 the Hayswood Hospital was closed for good.

In 1994 after 11 years of sitting vacant, Ester Johnson of Classic Properties bought the building at public auction. Classic Properties bought old buildings specifically to repurpose them for other uses. The hospital however would present substantial financial issues. After failing to sell the property bake to the city in 2000 progress has been slow on deciding what to do with the building. As of today, a grant has been applied to start removing the asbestos inside the building but no decision has yet been reached about whether to rebuild or tear down the old Hospital.

Thought the fate of the hospital may still be in limbo; to some the haunted Hayswood Hospital is as active today as it ever was. The paranormal claims coming from the hospital includes everything from apparitions to shadows to voices. Claims have been reported of seeing patients as well as staff still roaming the halls.

Paranormal claims starting coming from the hospital before it was even closed. Apparitions of nurses and other staff members have been reported as seen by patients while the hospital was still in operation. One of the most documented claims is that of a woman carrying a baby walking through the maternity ward area. She has also been seen just standing holding her baby crying.

Claims continued after the hospital was closed. Neighbors have reported to have seen lights glowing in the windows and an apparition who always stands in the last window on the third floor. Those that have been inside the old building have claimed to feel like they are being watched and report shadows darting around the halls.

There are a lot of claims that come from the haunted Hayswood Hospital. Many that have investigated there say it is one of the most haunted places in America and goes as far as claiming Hayswood Hospital haunts the entire town.
