Willam Howe was a member of the Irish Brigade, 116th pennsylvania. He was injured in battle when his unit were in the battle of fredricksburg. Howe was injured while dragging other Union soldiers back to Union lines. He spent a couple weeks in hospital then decided to leave and recover at home. He was charged with desertion and soldiers were sent to get him at his home near reading, pa. There was a standoff and Howe killed a soldier attempting to bring him back. He was arrested and housed at Ft Mifflin. He led a breakout from casemate #5 of over 200 prisoners. He was then put in casemate #11 and he then escaped from there and was recaptured soon after he surfaced. He was transferred to Eastern State Penn until the day of his hanging. He was then sent back to Ft Mifflin and was publicly hanged in which the US Army sold tickets to his hanging. That is the real story of W Howe..
