Continued from A Ghosts Perspective – A Ghost Story
Though so excited, Elizabeth didn’t want to be a distraction and stayed in the background to not get in the way. She listened as they walked around the downstairs and the couple, Todd and Valerie she learned, where getting more thrilled with every room. Elizabeth learned they were newly married, just like her and Robert so many years ago, and as they walked into the kitchen the new wife was overjoyed as to how big and functional it was because they planned on having a big family.
“Perfect!” Elizabeth thought. Though she badly wanted to say how that kitchen had served thousands of wonderful meals over the years, had allowed for family bonding moments she wouldn’t trade for the world and was indeed perfect, she refrained. It wasn’t the right time she surmised. See, Elizabeth died a few days after Roberts’s funeral of what many people believe was a broken heart.
The young couple continued their tour of the house and each room brought even more excitement building upon itself till they reached the master bedroom. It was that room that really sealed the deal. Valerie even commented how it seemed so peaceful in the room. It was definitely going to be their bedroom. Elizabeth stood in the corner, overcome with emotion, thankful there would be someone in the house that would care for it as much as she did.
Of course there would have to be some understanding regarding the house, it has been Elizabeth’s house for far too many years to count but she was sure they could come to terms. Besides, Elizabeth thought, it would be nice to have someone to share the house with again. She truly hopes this couple would understand she only wants to help and be a part of a family again. She had no intention of being a burden or to scare anyone. The timing has to be just right to make her presence known so not to have a repeat of last time.
The last couple that rented the home was a middle aged couple that worked all the time. They had no family plans and seemed to come together almost by accident everyday for a quick meal in front of the TV and bed just to get up and do their own thing again the next day. Elizabeth didn’t understand and was just trying to explain what the couple was missing by not spending quality time together as well as point out some things that were going bad around the house.
At first she just tried putting stuff back in its place and tiding up while they were at work. Thinking she was being helpful, this seemed to unnerve the couple. At one point even causing a mild argument over why things were moved around. Not wanting to be the cause of stress in the relationship she came to them that night in the bedroom. As she was getting ready to explain she was only trying to help the couple jumped up and ran out the door, movers were there a couple days later and she never saw them again.
No, Elizabeth pondered, this time will be different. She will pick and choose her time and hopefully the young couple will realize she is there as a friend and welcome her into their family. Elizabeth spent the next few days tidying up the old house and sure enough, that weekend the truck arrived and the moving began in earnest. As the couple opened the door they were somewhat shocked as the house looked spotless. They knew the house was vacant for a few months and during their initial walk through, it was a little dirty around the edges.
Given the credit to the real estate agent and making a mental note to thank her, the couple started the hard work of bringing in their stuff. Elizabeth was amused; their “stuff” consisted of a bed and dresser, sofa and mismatched chair, TV and a few kitchen items. Elizabeth fondly remembered her first day as well as her and Robert, newly married didn’t have a lot either. Just like then, the house was much larger than the items that were in it but she knew that it wouldn’t take long to fill it up.
Elizabeth decided to wait a few weeks to let everyone get accustom to their new surroundings before she tried to meet her new house guests. She learned Todd went to work every day at 8 am and Valerie worked part time and was home most of the week. They spent the evening together talking about their day, future plans and just enjoying each other’s company. Being the motherly type however, Elizabeth did help around the house a little but Valerie had figured it was Todd.
As Elizabeth was trying to find the right moment to introduce herself there was an incident one afternoon that changed everything. It was one of those unseasonably warm days that happen in the south occasionally, summer not ready to let go altogether. Valerie was working in the yard and decided to take a bath before Todd came home and she started dinner. She turned on the bath water when the doorbell rang.
It was a neighbor from down the road who had brought her a good ole homemade apple pie for a house warming gift. They got to chatting about the neighborhood and where they were from and Valerie lost track of time a little completely forgetting about the bath water running. She excused herself suddenly and running up the steps she was already bracing for the worst and making back up plans for dinner.
When she got to the bathroom, the water was off. Elizabeth knew how southern neighbors can be chatty and turned the water off right before it was going to spill out the bath. Valerie was left scratching her head and though not really coming up with a logical explanation, was relieved there was no big mess and took her bath.
That night over dinner there was a discussion about the water cutting off and Todd checked it out and figured a changing of the water pressure must have turn the knobs enough to cut off the water. They were old fixtures and a little loose so that was a good enough reason to solve this little mystery and after a comfortable evening they went to bed.
