Converting the SIMA SL20IR to AA Battery Power

I just converted my SIMA SL 20IR lights to run off 3 AA batteries instead of the rechargeable battery that it comes with. One of the biggest complaints I had with these lights is the low battery life it had. Here is how I did it step by step. They conversion works perfectly for me but before you start I must warn you that you try this at your own risk.

You will need:

  • Drill and a small drill bit (about 1/16th)
  • 3 or 4 AA battery compartment (it will use 3 batteries)
  • Velcro
  • Very small Phillips head screwdriver
  • Shrink wrap/Electrical tape
  • Snips to cut wire

OK, let’s get started:

Step 1 – Take out the 4 screws in the back on the SIMA unit. There is one in every corner. Believe it or not this is the hardest step. They are very small screws recessed in pretty deep and can be striped rather easily. Be careful and when you get them out lay them somewhere out the way, losing these small screws could be easy.

Step 2 – After the screws are out the front will fall away along with the red cover. You will be left with the LED’s and the silver reflector in the back. The silver reflector fits snugly but it just pulls out from around the LED’s. After that there up to 3 screws holding down the circuit board, remove them and you will find the SIMA rechargeable battery underneath. (I say up to three because I have done one with three screws and one that only had one screw)

Step 3 – Snip off the wires coming from the battery pack as close as you can to the battery, you will need the wire’s coming from the circuit board as long as possible.

Battery Pack

Step 4 – Drill a small hole in the back of the SIMA, I put mine between the LED and the off side of the switch. Run you’re newly cut wires through the back and reassemble the SIMA. If the bottom part that screw’s into the camera has come off, there are a couple ways to slide it back on but only one way for everything to fit again. There is a flat part of that piece that goes towards the front.

SIMA Back

Step 5 – Let’s get the battery compartment ready. I went to The Shack and found a nice 4 AA compartment that had an on/off switch. We only need 3 AA batteries for this so if you find one that hold only 3 you can use it. I couldn’t at the Shack next to me so went with this one.

In order for this to work with just three batteries we have to run a short wire across the last battery spot. It was not difficult and I just soldered it at both ends.

Battery Compartment

Step 6 – Now we just connect the two sides. Strip some of the insulation off the wires coming from the SIMA box (used to connect to SIMA battery). The wires go red to red and black to black. What I did was solder the two wires together and put a piece of shrink wrap around it to keep the two from touching. It is important the bare wires do not touch so you will have to wrap them with electrical tape or something.

Final Connection

Step 7 – Put in three batteries and make sure both the battery compartment and the SIMA switches are on. You should see the Sima Unit on now. If not make sure all your connections are good and also check to make sure the wires going to the circuit board (used to connect to rechargeable) are still connected. I did have these come off on one unit and had to solder them back onto circuit board.

Step 8 – Now we just have to Velcro the two sides together. I have two suggestions here. One, make sure you can get to both on/off switches (SIMA and battery compartment) and two I made sure the side that unattached and lets me change batteries was facing out so I didn’t have to un-velcro to replace batteries.

There you have it! Now instead of charging all night and getting 45 minutes of battery life, you should be able to use these lights all night or at the very least only have to change batteries once! Interested in any variations you may come up with or better ways of doing it so post them in the comment section.

PhantomLite IR/UV/Full Spectrum Lights

I was pointed in the direction of these lights from a twitter follower (Parachasers – Chris DeMent). I emailed Randy of Cold Spot Paranormal and asked a few questions and got timely and informative answers so I asked him if he would tell me a little more about his lights. I currently use “another brand” of IR illuminators and quite frankly think charging them every 45 minutes is annoying. You can see the Phantom Lite in action in the forum as well as get answers from Randy (PHANTOMLITE) – Phantom Lite video I asked Randy to write something for Ghost Eyes readers and he sent the following, Thank You Randy.

I have been into the paranormal world for about twelve years and I have seen and heard weird things since I was a child. One of the houses I have lived in had some good activity like someone banging and scratching on the doors. Also you would hear something running down the hall. I used to set up a Sony handy cam with night shot and let’s just say the commercial Illuminators would always let me down. I would get everything setup and recording before I would go to bed, and later in the night I would be awoken with a banging on the door and come to see that the illuminator was dead!

So I started thinking about building one for myself. I knew it would have to be portable and last all night. After about 2 years and countless hours, I have designed a board that not only was really bright but lasted for over 12 HOURS! Now about 3 years later I have a great product and cheap enough for everyone to afford! Every Illuminator that I sell is machined and hand built by me. I test every one about 3 times until the illuminators are ready to get shipped.

I love to help out anyone with either questions about my lights or being related to the paranormal. Not only do I make the lights I am a avid investigaor. We are all in this together trying to get that holy grail of proof. I believe with the right tools we will get that evidence to change the world! I have just opened a new site and would love to get evidence, Links, pictures etc!! Send them my way!

PhantomLite IR IlluminatorThe Infrared model was the first one I have made and got me started in this. The distance on this is about 50ft. and at this distance you would still get a good enough picture from your camcorder. They have a tripod connector on the bottom for you to mount to any accessories associated with cameras or camcorders. They have a very wide angle viewing light on them so they light up the entire room not like a flash light that is real bright in the middle and dark on the outside. They do work with cameras that are set up for Infrared viewing and any camcorder that has a night vision mode or nigh shot. You could also use them with infrared security, cctv cameras. I like setting them up on a tripod to add extra Infrared light for my dvr cameras.

PhantomLite UV IlluminatorUltraviolet models are great for crime scene evidence gathering. They work on Infrared, Full Spectrum and any camcorder or camera. These are not designed for projecting out a huge beam of light like the Infrared model. They light up a nice cool blue color and will light up a room no problem. There are a lot of theories out there with the paranormal world and these are here to help you test your own theories out. These are also designed and built by me and tested!

The Full Spectrum model will be out by the middle of June! I do not want to go into big detail with these until they are out. These are true Full Spectrum Illuminators and if your in love with your Full Spectrum camera or camcorder you really want one of these!

Thanks for reading!

The Credibility of the Franks Box

When it comes to the paranormal, there are a lot of theories but that’s all they are, theories. Now granted there are a few that everyone agrees on and are based on similar experiences that people have throughout the world. One good example is EMF. Do they really point to spirit activity? Based on evidence gathered by many different teams you could say yes but the reality is no one really knows and it is just a working theory.

Due to this fact, I try real hard to look at every device and technique with an open mind and then possible test that technique for myself. I do tend to lend more towards the science and though believe personal experiences when they cannot be debunked; having valid data to back it up really gets me excited.
With all this in mind, along comes the Frank’s Box. I watched it work on a couple videos and then again on the live Ghost Adventures show and even heard some posted EVP’s from someone using it. I have the instructions on how to modify the Radio Shack tuner right here…but just cannot get myself to try it. I know, I just said I try and stay open minded! I just can’t get over the fact that there are random words scanning over the airways and luck is playing a part in the answers you are receiving.

Then along came the videos below from Don Merchant, Co-Founder, Sci Tech Paranormal Investigations (www.scitechpi.com ). These videos do a great job explaining what the Franks Box is and how it works. The most interesting to me was the time/frequency data. In his set up the scan stays on each frequency .10 seconds. Hard to get random words going that fast. I sent Don an email and asked if I could post these and he said sure. Here is what Don said about the Franks Box:

Thank you very much for the compliment on the Frank’s Box Video’s! I have spent several years trying to discount or credit the validity on this form of communication. I felt that there was not allot in detail on this subject let alone allot of research done to intrigue the enquiring minds that this form of communication just may work. I checked the Youtube video’s and internet search engines for information on the Frank’s Box (which was limited) and decided that what is needed is a video that is in layman terms and informative while delivering the plot in the viewers lap and the shocking end as they watch and understand as you did Steve my section of time/frequency using several EVP’s as examples.

Now before everyone asks, Don is currently making a third video explaining his unique set up and what parts are needed along with and instruction guide on how to put it together and use it.

Like everything we post here on Ghost Eyes, we are not here to change your mind just open it. Hope you enjoy these.
