Ghost Hunting Equipment
There are a lot of tools that paranormal investigators use on a regular basis, such as the EMF (Electro-magnetic field) detectors, infrared cameras and dowsing rods. This article will teach you about the various, common ghost hunting tools, how they work and how they pertain to paranormal investigations.
EMF Meter
The EMF Meter, or electro-magnetic field detector, is a light-weight, hand-held device that measures electro-magnetic radiation. The EMF meter picks up and displays the strength of fields of electro-magnetic radiation in Hz, and is often used in the business class to alert its user to the presence of underground power lines and other man-made devices that emit extremely high levels of EMF.
In the ghost hunting world, EMF meters are extremely useful for debunking paranormal reports, as well as tracking an unexplained source of EMF, which has been linked to ghostly activity. High EMF readings are generally associated with feeling of paranoia, nervousness, nausea, the feeling that one is being “watched” and other common complaints that lead people believe an area is haunted. Using this device, a paranormal investigator can find the source of the high EMF, which is usually a high voltage power line, a home or building’s electrical power box or some such device. In other cases where there is no such mechanism in the area to create such high EMF readings, especially in such cases where the EMF readings fluctuate and move about, it can be concluded that a ghost may be causing high EMF measurements.
K-II Meter
The K-II Meter is much like the EMF meter, except that it gauges EMF readings with a series of lights on the top of the device. There are 5 light bulbs on the K-II meter, each aligned with a different color; dark-green, light-green, yellow, orange and red. Each color relates to a different range of EMF levels. K-II meters became all but obsolete until they were incorporated into paranormal investigating.
It is believed that a K-II meter can be used to speak with ghosts, as seen on numerous episodes of Sci-Fi’s “Ghost Hunters”. The idea is that an investigator can ask for “yes” or “no” responses from the ghost, commanding a specific way for the K-II meter to light up for each intended response. In one episode of Ghost Hunters, T.A.P.S. Lead Investigator Grant Wilson asked a ghost to light up one bulb for a “no”, or two bulbs for a “yes”. Other investigations have involved the meter lighting up for a “yes”, or not light up at all for a “no”.
Thermometers
Thermometers are small, electronic devices that measures the air temperature in a specific area. Picking up the temperature within a 1-2 foot radius of the thermometer’s tip, the user can find temperature spikes, drop-offs and level readings.
Paranormal investigators will often use a thermometer to detect sudden spikes or drop-offs in the temperature of a certain area. It is believed that when a ghost attempts to manifest itself, it sucks the energy from a spot in the area, thereby dropping the temperature drastically. These are known as “cold spots”, and are often associated with hauntings.
Infrared Motion Detector
An infrared motion detector picks up the different heat levels in an area and displays them by colors; white and blue being the coldest, shades of green being normal, and yellow, orange and red being progressively hotter. When pointing an infrared camera at a person, the background is generally green, while the person is a mix of yellow and orange around the outline of the body, and predominantly red in the center. As a “motion detector”, the infrared camera only activates when there is change in temperature detected within the range of the camera.
Infrared motion detectors became popular among paranormal investigators when it was discovered that apparitions can often be seen on the screen, the same as a living being would be displayed, though there is no visible being in the area. Infrared devices can also be used to find hidden heat sources that may effect EMF meters, such as underground power lines.
Dowsing “L” Rods
Dowsing is a process that uses tools, such as pendulums or rods, to find answers to questions we cannot answer ourselves. A dowsing rod is an L shaped rod that can be used in this manner. They can be made of any hard material, commonly copper. The handle end is generally about 3x shorter than the rod itself. In the general business world, dowsing rods are used to locate water, mineral and oil veins, as well as the direction they are flowing, and identifying geopathic stress lines. It’s not certain hwy dowsing works, but it has been proven highly effective.
In the spiritual realm, dowsing “L” rods are often used to find lost objects, speak to ghosts or find out answers to a persons concerns, such as their heath. The user holds two of these L shaped rods by the handle. Having sleeves over he handles is easiest as it allows the rods to swing more freely. Holding the rods parallel to the ground, and one another, the user will define how each question is to be answered. For example, if the rod tips move outward, away from each other, this could be a “yes”, while crossing the rods into an X pattern could be a “no”. The user then asks questions, and the rods provide the answers. Finding objects is also very common, as a rod can point in the direction of the lost item and direct the user to its location. It generally takes a lot of practice, and dowsing is not considered a consistently successful method, even by professional dowers.
Geiger Counter
A Geiger Counter is used to detect various levels of radiation in an area. The device contains a tube of gas, usually helium, argon or neon, with halogens present. When a photon of radiation makes contact with the gas-filled tube, electricity is conducted for a brief moment. This activates the needle point, causing it to jump up to precise level of radiation detected, and is often accompanied by a clicking noise to indicate the strength of the radiation level.
Paranormal investigators are known to use Geiger Counters to find radiation levels within a known area of hauntings. Much the like EMF detector, the Geiger Counter will identify spikes of radiation. If there is no device or material present to cause such a spike in the radiation, it is believed that paranormal activity could causing the reaction of the Geiger Counter.
