Electronic Voice Phenomena or as most have come to recognize from many television programs, EVP is when you get a voice on some sort of recording media that doesn’t have a physical explanation attached to it as to why it is there.
There are three commonly accepted classes of voices that can be attributed to an EVP and here is a very general explanation of what they are:
Class A – A voice or sound that can be heard and understood when played back over a speaker
Class B – A voice or sound not clearly heard over a speaker and could be debated as to what it says
Class C – A voice or sound only heard through headphones and even then maybe difficult to understand
The question we get all the time is how do you get EVP’s? We thought we would share the technique’s we use as well as the equipment we use during an EVP session. Hopefully something here will help you during your own sessions. Our technique is pretty simple but it has worked well for us so far and we hope it will also work well for you.
Equipment
Recorder – We have used an analog recorder and our personal preference was to dismiss them all together. We now use inexpensive digital recorders (all in the $35-$40 range) and up till now have not used any sort of external microphone. We have had great success using these and believe it is all you need to get started.
You – Here is where we think a lot of people mess up. You can have a room wired for sound to hear ants crawling on the floor but will do you no good if you are not in sync with your location and with whom you are trying to communicate as much as possible. Go into an EVP session with a plan and a clear head.
Technique
First off some common things we think every good EVP should have. Before beginning say your name and everyone with you, location, time and weather condition. Start and end your EVP session with 10 or 15 seconds of silence and make a note of any audible sounds while recording. For example note a cough, walking, car going by outside window or anything to help tag the audio with an explanation of what someone listening later might deem unusual. Try not to whisper during a session as well, if you are going to talk, say it out loud so there is no confusion later as to where the voice came from.
The underlying theme to our EVP sessions is respect. You have no idea (unless the answer is audible as you conduct the session) whether you are getting answers to your questions or not, so we think showing respect is the utmost importance.
You would not walk into a room of strangers and yell “What is your name”? We start every session with introducing ourselves before we ask any questions. You can have one person do it or have however many people are with you take turns introducing themselves. We also explain the equipment we have with us and how it works before starting into the questions. The red light is the recorder, what the KII meter will do if they get close, explain that you may not be able to here there answers till later and to speak as loudly and clearly as they can, etc.
We try to keep our questions simple so to keep the answers down to one or two words as well as trying to keep the session conversational. For example answers that would include yes, no, what state are you from, what years is it, etc? We believe it takes a lot of energy for a ghost to answer so we want to keep it as simple as possible and in that same vein, we allow for 15 seconds or so in between questions to give a spirit time to gather energy to answer.
We hope this answers a lot of the emails questions we have gotten. No real secrets, we just try to treat an entity with the same respect we would if the person was standing in front of us. Hopefully in death as in life, the more comfortable someone is with you, the more they will talk.

The spirit world came calling on me in 2001 and they haven’t stopped since. Where I live right now seems like a spirit depot! When they want attention, they let me know. They’ll pull pictures down off the wall, turn my lights on and off, open my doors, make my music box play, I have been poked in the shoulder, touched on the leg. I have 12 cassettes with spirit voices and conversations. I have been getting complete sentences. AND they are SO polite! Complete with Thank you’s and your’e welcome from them. It has been a joyful experience. I give them 30 seconds to a minute to respond so as not to overlap with my questions. For the last few weeks, I have been doing EVP sessions every night. It is our special time together. I told them I love this time with them and being able to communicate with them. One sweet spirit responded with “Thank you for communicating with me!” It is on the tape. Very clear. How sweet is that?! I have a name roster right now with 21 names!
I do roll call every night to see who is here! LOL! One little boy named Wendell, told me, when I asked him if he had been here that morning, told me ” I was gone. I wasn’t here”. Very clear on the tape. I also have complete names. One boy gave me first, Middle and last name.
I recently found out that I am Native American so I attribute all this to that. Lots of children and at least 2 ot three murder victums. One woman told me they killed her with medication!
It is on the tape. I have let my sister hear my EVP’s over her voice mail and my neighbor, and they are astounded! My sister can see spirits. She works in a haunted house- The Pearl Bryan Home in Putnam County, Indiana. She says they are in solid form and they walk across the room and into the wall! The peole she works with see them too but not as often as she does.
They have had paranormal investigation and the energy seems to be highest around her.
This experience has been out of this world! (Literally) It is my new mission in life. I feel like a crossing guard as I send them to the light- to God.
Who Knew?!
I am 20 years old and I have moved around a couple different times in the past year. Each place i have lived has had spiritual activity. The first was horrifying not in a pushing or hurtful way but mentally. The second I was only scared once, and that was just because it was unexpected. The third is where i reside now. It is an apartment building built in a remodeled very old building. This building happens to be right next to a very old railroad. I have become very intreged with paranormal activity. I want to conduct an EVP session in our apartment but my wife is concerned with opening a door into our lives for evil entities. If i show them respect, will they respect me? Or should i worry and not do it. Or is there a way to keep the bad ones out?
Here is our opinion and we invite others to add there as well. If you start opening the lines of communication, whether your at home or elsewhere, we think activity will increase. You ask “If i show them respect, will they respect me?”, and we say no. Our opinion is if the spirit was mean or disrespectful in life they will also be that way in death.
As far as keeping the bad ones out, again we think the answer is no. There are tricksters out that that will pretend to be nice just to get a foothold in your life. You will find opinions out there that say you can and they could be right. What you have to understand is what you believe has more importance than what you know.
Now I most again say this is our opinions and I can assure you, you will find different ones out there. The bottom line is no one can really tell you for sure but can offer advice based in there own experiences.
