Most Haunted Places in America: Petersburg National Battlefield Park
This is the continuation of the ongoing investigation at Petersburg National Battlefield Park. This investigation in focused on Battery 9. Here is part 1 of this paranormal investigation.
She half jokingly said he must not want me here and the K2 reacted. I asked if it would be better if Angela left and again the K2 reacted. Then I asked if it could stop making it react if they wanted Angela to leave and it stopped. Now I was intrigued but again time to go as darkness was coming up fast. Later evaluation of EVP session found nothing. Still not ready to eliminate man-made interference, we decided to go again and take another member of the team, Darius, with me.
The next evening we get the same reaction from the K2 meter but this time a lot more active and in a wider area. We do another EVP session but do to the erratic K2 readings of the evening we are now convinced it was man-made interference and a little disappointed, we start home. This time however, we do get an EVP reaction. When asked what state which they came from we get something that three different people, listening independently, have said was “North Carolina”. When asked for a name so we could contact possible family members, we get two syllables but no one can make out what was said.
To me, the K2 reaction combined with an EVP is pretty good evidence. We do have a “possible” explanation to the K2 erratic behavior that we came up with when discussing the session that evening. Darius’s father is black and has served in the military all his life, his mother is white and also had a military background. Could this combined with the history of the site brought about the higher reaction from the spirits in the area? We are setting something up to possible find out.
The next visit was with me and my father. My father brings two things to the table; he is ex-military serving his country in Vietnam and one of the biggest skeptics of the paranormal I know. Again I turn on the K2 meter about 100 yards from the intersection and no reaction till we hit the spot under the tree. We have to immediately walk through the woods around, under and if we could have, on top of the electric pole and no reaction. We walk further straight down the path/road, further than I did the first time, and nothing and when we left, we continued down and around the .5 mile path and the K2 didn’t react anywhere except in that one area. (Man, he is thorough!)
This time the K2 reacted like it had every time before other than the Darius visit. The K2 seemingly reacted to multiple questions for us for about 30 minutes. From no reading at all, I asked if it was OK for my father to be there and the meter blinked its full range. Then I asked it to stop and it stopped. Asked if he was from North Carolina like we found on the last EVP and again it pegged the meter. Me as well as my father asked several more questions that seemingly got a response.
When analyzing some of the EVP session we again got a reply to one of the questions. I asked how long had it been here in the area and the response sounds like “a long time”. A possible historical reference here, the siege of Petersburg lasted 10 months.
Though the reaction from the meter, followed by another positive EVP session is enough evidence for me to continue visiting and gathering information; my dad is still not convinced and is looking for possible explanations other than the paranormal.
To see if the explanation we came up with about Darius’s background having a possible effect of the spirits, the next visit is going to be me and Darius again to see if the K2 reacts the same as it did before and then yet another with me and Angela to see if she gets the same type of non-reaction she got before, all this while trying to make the right contacts to get permission to be there past dark. We will write up what, if anything comes from them as we finish evaluating the evidence.

I was doing my AIT at Ft. Lee from January 1984 to April 1984. We used to have timed runs around that open area along Adams St. My barracks were just across the street, Romeo Company. I’m not sure why I didn’t think to do this years ago, I’ve told only my wife this story. She convinced me to persue this. I walked thru the wooded area via a path that I can barely see now on GOOGLE Maps one Saturday afternoon just out of curiosity. I had seen the trail, but never had the time until then to adventure out and see what was there. I came upon an opening that looked like a re-created Civil War encampent. Kind of plain, but interesting none the less. I might have been there 5 or 10 minutes when I had to sit down. I thought I was imagining things, I actually saw spirits, people in period clothing, yet I could see right thru them. None paid any attention to me. There were at least twenty by the time I could think to count them all. They just appeared to be doing there daily routine.I have no idea how long I was actually taking in this scene, I only know that I was totaly amazed and wished to see more. When I came back to reality? they were all faded away and just a wonderful memory ever since. I am now seriously thinking of returning to this place just to see if any of it would come back. I’m a Virginia resident and can not reason why I haven’t thought of this till now, other than to say I probably thought everyone would think I was of my rocker. I must talk to my wife about a drive up to Ft. Lee. She says this may be an imprint, she’s read all of Sylvia Browne’s books (literally, all). Thanks for giving me some place to vent.
John, That is an amazing story. We too are Va residents and only about 15 minutes from the Battlefield itself. Would love to be able to investigate this story with you. I think Petersburg Battlefield has a lot to offer by means of paranormal activity and enjoy our visits there.
My family lived on Fort Lee Va. 1972-1981. Jackson Circle housing was next to Petersburg National Battlefield Park – no fence seperating them, just woods. In 2 of 3 houses my family members and several friends had experiences such as doors suddenly flying open. The houses were built on land people fought5 and died on. Many unmarked graves. I am currently writing about those and similar experiences. Title is: My Grandfathers’ House and Other Scary Places.
