Most Haunted Places in America: Petersburg National Battlefield Park
We at Ghostseyes.com are fortunate, we think, to live in an area surrounded by history. We are right in the middle of some of the major Civil War battlefields. So we have decided to embark on a journey in history and see if some of the ghosts of this most heroic, passionate and bloodiest time in our history can communicate a little about what is was like to live the horror.
Petersburg National Battlefield Park is a 2,700 acres park that contains well preserved earthworks, hiking trails, 3 forts, 3 battery encampments and the Crater. The Crater is, well, a hole. The Union dug a 511 foot tunnel under one of the confederate positions and then blew it up. This will be written about later as we expand our investigations. This investigation was concentrated on Battery 9.
A little back history: Grant had just been given control of the whole Union army and had his troops lined up at Cold Harbor ready to take on Lee and the Army of Northern Virginia head on. The two massive armies clashed with nothing but dead soldiers to count after all was said and done. (This battlefield is next on the list of investigations). Grant finally decided to leave the area and move south to Petersburg to cut off supply lines. Lee woke up one morning and found the whole Union army gone; the Siege of Petersburg was on.
The Confederate Battery 9 was taken by black Union troops of Hink’s division on the first day of the siege. There is a trail behind this battery, Meade’s trail, which is an old road called Prince George Court House Road built as the supply route of the confederate army and now used by the Union. There is an intersection, know as Meade Station (know just wooded area) that was also a hospital depot. It is this intersection we have been conducting our paranormal investigation.
We have been there now 4 times and purposely have not asked if anyone has experienced anything there until recently to confirm some of our findings. Our investigations have been held between 7 and 8:30 pm due to park closing at night. Due to some experiences we have had, we are currently working on getting to stay later into the evening. First off, let me explain some personal experiences at this intersection.
You walk down this barely gravel road flanked by woods on either side, very quiet and had to be similar to what it was like during the war. As we get to the intersection, you are within ½ mile or so of the Fort Lee Military Base. It is just two investigators this trip, Angela and I. Angela hears voices coming from the intersection as we approach, I did not hear them. We decide it must have been coming from the military base and continue on. I have taken two completely different people with me on trip 3 and 4 and both have heard two men talking as we come up on the intersection and I have yet to hear anything.
There is no one in the intersection on any of the occasions when we arrive but because of the proximity of Fort Lee and being in fairly thick woods that can do strange things in the way of sounds being carried; we have to say that this experience can have an explanation behind it. Another personal experience is with the K2 meter on all 4 occasions.
Walking up to the intersection and again continuing away from the intersection, the K2 meter will stay dormant. Within the intersection and particularly a few feet off the trail under an old tree it spikes significantly. On day 1 we did an EVP session (later found to contain no evidence) and walked in all directions away from the area only to see the K2 meter drop off to no reading. We did find a small overhead power line about 50 feet from the corner but walking directly underneath and walking around the pole provided no K2 meter response at all.
Angela and I decided to go back the next evening and see if the K2 responded similarly, it did. We are not getting a constant reading; it is blinking in varying strength even though I am standing in one spot. Though not ready to eliminate man-made interference, especially with a lack of EVP evidence to help strengthen the possibility of a ghost, something changed to possible sway my thinking. The K2 seemingly started to react to specific questions. It happened as we where ending our session, Angela was behind me 20 feet or so taking pictures. The K2 was reacting heavily and when done she walked up and the K2 immediately stopped.
