Allegan Lodge: Real Haunted Places

In 1909, a hospital was built-in Allegan, Michigan. The hospital, which would someday become the Allegan Lodge, had ties with organized crime. An underground tunnel connected the building to the house next door, where the founding physician, Dr. John Robinson, lived. He took care of his patients at the hospital for the first decade and a half of the building’s existence.  Unfortunately, many of the patients succumbed to their illnesses.

Sometime after 1925, it earned the nickname “mob Hospital”. Allegan’s closeness to Chicago made it an easy getaway for mobsters from the city. Much of the building’s history has been lost in time, and today we can only speculate on what might have went on there. According to some reports, it was used for illegal bootlegging during the prohibition period. Many “unspeakable” things allegedly happened in the interrogation room.

During the era of organized crime, the neighbors reported seeing black sedans arriving at the hospital during all hours of the night. Mobsters were allegedly treated for their gunshot wounds. Screams were often heard originating from the building at night.

Even if we don’t know the specifics of what all went on at the Allegan Lodge, there is one thing for certain: it has the reputation of being one of the most haunted places in America. It’s even received the title as “The Most Haunted Place in the Midwest”.

The hospital remained in operation for decades before it was purchased by the Elks Lodge in 2010. Plans to renovate the hospital and turn it into a conference center have stirred up spirits of the hospital’s past. In the past few years, visitors and workers have reported seeing strange apparitions and hearing strange noises.

Over the past couple of years, numerous paranormal investigation teams have come in to investigate. During a private investigation, an apparition was apparently caught on film, and one of the psychics involved in the project believes that it’s the spirit of a mafia man known as “Tall Louie”. If nothing else, creepy ambience and chill spots are found throughout the premise. The new owners of the Allegan Lodge regularly hold public investigations.
